Bio-based Industries JU Calls for Proposals to Support Research & Innovation Activities

The Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (JU) is a public-private partnership between the EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium. Running from 2014 to 2024, it has a total budget of EUR 3.705 billion, of which about 75% will be contributed by the private partners.

The objective of the partnership is to contribute to developing a more resource efficient and sustainable low carbon economy, while increasing economic growth and employment, by developing sustainable and competitive bio based industries in Europe based on advanced biorefineries that source their biomass sustainably.

The Bio-based Industries JU organized calls for proposals for supporting research, demonstration and deployment activities. The first Call for Proposals was published recently and organized around 16 topics within two main types of actions: Research and innovation actions (RIA-10 topics) and Innovation actions (IA) including Demonstration INSERT INTO [lzx].[dbo].[tb_new]([id],[type],[title],[source],[personal],[image],[contents],[time],[number]) VALUES (5 topics) and Flagship INSERT INTO [lzx].[dbo].[tb_new]([id],[type],[title],[source],[personal],[image],[contents],[time],[number]) VALUES (1 topic).

RIA topics:
  • Efficient pre-treatment of lignocellulosic feedstock to advanced bio-based chemicals and biomaterials
  • New sustainable pulping technologies
  • New products from sustainable cellulose pulp exploitation
  • Fibers and polymers from lignin
  • Sugars from effluents of the pulping process and discharged fibers
  • Fermentation processes to obtain biosurfactants and specialty carbohydrates from agricultural and agro-industrial streams
  • Protein products from plant residues
  • Bioactive compounds from meso-organisms bioconversion
  • Valuable products from heterogeneous biowaste streams
  • Nutrient recovery from biobased waste streams and residues
Demonstration topics:
  • Lignocellulosic residues to (di)carboxylic acids, diols and polyols
  • Chemical building blocks and value-added materials through integrated processing of wood
  • Advanced products from lignin and cellulose streams of the pulp and paper industry
  • Functional additives from residues from the agro-food industry
  • Cost efficient manure valorization on large scale
Flagship topics:
  • Added value products from underutilized agricultural resources
